There are 5 levels of the current JLPT. If you are studying from older JLPT textbooks then you can use the list below to compare the levels.

N1: Basically the same as the original level 1 but a bit harder
N2: The original level 2
N3: About halfway between the original level 2 and level 3
N4: The original level 3
N5: The original level 4

I think the new system is much better because there was such a big jump between the old level 3 and the old level 2.
